ABSTRACT

Abstract The ant genus Pheidole is the most species-rich lineage of ants in the world and one of the dominant organisms in tropical regions. However, the knowledge of Pheidole diversity in the southern half of the Neotropical Region is fragmentary. Here, we offer contributions to the Pheidole taxonomy considering the species that occur in the grassland formations of South Brazil. The following species are revived from synonymy: P. idiota Santschi rev. stat., P. obscurior Forel rev. stat., P. paranana Santschi stat. rev. et n. stat. and P. strobeli Emery rev. stat. The following synonyms are proposed: P. idiota (= P. laticornis Wilson n. syn.), P. obscurior (= P. partita Mayr n. syn., = P. incisa evoluta Borgmeier n. syn.) and P. strobeli (= P. rufipilis divexa Forel n. syn., = P. nitidula daguerrei Santschi n. syn., = P. perversa Forel n. syn., = P. perversa richteri Forel n. syn., = P. strobeli misera Santschi n. syn.). Finally, six new species are described: P. abakytan n. sp., P. abaticanga n. sp., P. cangussu n. sp., P. curupira n. sp., P. mapinguari n. sp., and P. obapara n. sp.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: The Devonian Escarpment (DEEPA), located in the south of Brazil, represents an important area of environmental preservation composed by grasslands, gallery forests, as well as rock outcrops and archaeological sites. A law project (LP 527/2016), which suggests a reduction of the DEEPA area in approximately 70% of its original area (from 393,579 to 125,895 ha), is currently being processed in the Paraná State House of Representatives. Such reduction seems to be related to economic interests (mainly agriculture and mining) in the state of Paraná. If approved, LP 527/2016 will allow farmers to deliberately expand their activities, with the suppression of natural forest as main consequence. Additionally, loss of faunal diversity, contamination of water and soils, and alteration in nutrient cycles are expected, due the intensive use of agrochemicals. In addition to the direct environmental consequences, we expect the disappearance of areas of high geological interest, reducing local geodiversity, as well as substantial economic losses with ecotourism. Brazil is a signatory to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, where it undertakes to develop strategies to prevent biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation by 2020. An approval of the LP would be contradictory, considering that there are few natural vegetation areas in this region of the country. We emphasize that the proposal of such projects goes against the sustainability in the country and disregard the scientific knowledge generated until then. Thus, it is necessary to develop regional and federal political objectives that guarantee economic development in a balanced way, considering the local bio and geodiversity, not the proposal of mechanisms that destroy them.

ABSTRACT

In spite of encouragement and investment in fruit production in the state of Paraná, little information is available on the fruit flies, a major pest in fruit growing. The present study had the objective of recording for the first time the tephritid fauna in the region of Ponta Grossa, and characterize the insect community through different faunal indices. Adult tephritids were collected by means of flapper bottles with food baits in four orchards from August to December 2009. A total of 2,428 tephritids distributed in seven species were collected: Anastrepha fraterculus Wiedemann, Anastrepha montei Lima, Anastrepha pseudoparallela Loew, Anastrepha sororcula Zucchi, Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann, Rhagoletis sp. Loew and Hexachaeta sp. Loew. A. A. fraterculus was the only species common to the four orchards, occurring in a frequency higher than 80%. This is the first record of A. montei in the state of Paraná. A. fraterculus, A. sororcula and C. capitata had the highest frequency, abundance, dominance and constancy, and are therefore considered predominant species. The highest diversity index (H'=0.4360) occurred in the orchard 2, differing significantly from all orchards (t test, P<0.05). The Margalef index values were low (close to or below 0.5) confirming that there are predominant species. Regarding the similarity of species between the orchards, that was determined by the coefficient of Jaccard and the Bray-Curtius index, the orchard 4, where occurred only two species (96% of A. fraterculus and 4% of A. pseudoparallela), forms a distinct group from other orchard sampled, where there were four species of Tephritidae.

ABSTRACT

A total of 76 samples of Streptococcus suis isolated from meningitis cases in pigs from 2005 to 2009 were evaluated. The samples were collected from 3 to 21-week-old pigs raised in 30 farms located in Paraná state, Brazil. The samples of S. suis were obtained as part of routine procedures and were serotyped by coagglutination test using rabbit hyperimmune sera for the serotypes 1 to 9 and ½. S. suis type 2 was the most frequent, followed by serotypes 1, ½ and 3.

ABSTRACT

The cerrado (Brazilian savannah) has its Southern limits of occurrence in the Campos Gerais region in the State of Paraná, through small disjunction patches with great affinities with the Northern savannah formations of São Paulo and the Central Plateau of Brazil. They are mostly on private lands, under strong pressure from agribusiness and have been hitherto little studied. A floristic and phytophysiognomical analysis of 30 remnants in different municipalities was carried out, reaching a total of 1,782 determined taxa, being Asteraceae the richest family (256), followed by Fabaceae (207), Poaceae (183), Myrtaceae (72) and Melastomataceae (54). There is a geomorphological and latitudinal gradient on the distribution of physiognomies: cerrado stricto sensu (50 percent) and cerradão (13 percent) are distributed mainly in the sandstone plateaus in the north region, while cerrado rupestre (17 percent) and grassland with cerrado facies (20 percent) are most frequent in the river valleys cliffs in the South. These remnants present floristic similarity with the core area of the Biome, and could be considered marginal areas of the geographical range of several taxa, sharing typical species of the Southern Province. Thus the whole area would be more correctly named savannah instead of steppe. The austral phytocoenosis of Ponta Grossa, a possible endemism centre with great richness, is biogeographically isolated from the other cerrado patches.

ABSTRACT

The present work is the first contribution for the knowledge of the Campos Gerais soils, the study of which was started by the Biological Institute and Technological Research, in Curitiba. In it there are discussed the soils of the Vila Velha region. Exposed the geological constitution of the landscape integrated by devonian beds in the Campos Gerais serie and the glacial deposits of the Itararé formation, the results of petrographic-sediment researches and the coefficients of selection of various sediments are given. A rapid exposition of the phytogeographic and climate conditions - according to Koeppen = 7 Cfb - is followed by the presentation of the results of the physical and chemical researches made in the soils of eight profiles, illustrated with the corresponding charts and by volumetric-chemical diagrams. The authors came to the conclusion that the part of Campos Gerais here taken into consideration is characterized by poor and washed soils, motivated by geological and climatic conditions. These soils lack specially in phosphorus, calcium, nitrogen and potassium. Two of the profiles constituted exception as they correspond to the area covered by a forest island, therefore, showing its soils in a little better condition.
